This medication is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and Wilson's disease (high levels of copper in the body that can result in damage to the liver and other organs). It is also used to prevent kidney stones. Penicillamine belongs to a class of drugs known as disease-modifying anti-rheumatoid drugs (DMARDs) and chelating agents.OTHER USES: This section contains uses of this drug that are not listed in the approved professional labeling for the drug but that may be prescribed by your health care professional. Use this drug for a condition that is listed in this section only if it has been so prescribed by your health care professional.This drug may also be used to treat lead poisoning certain liver conditions and certain skin conditions.How to use Penicillamine OralTake this medication by mouth without food on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after meals) 1 to 4 times daily or as directed by your doctor. Take each dose with a full glass of water (8 ounces or 240 milliliters). Avoid taking any other medication food or milk within at least 1 hour of taking penicillamine. Iron can interfere with the absorption of this medication. If you take supplements containing iron take them at least 2 hours apart from your dose of this medication. Take the last dose at least 3 hours after the evening meal.Drink plenty of water while taking this medication unless your doctor directs you otherwise.Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. WHO epidemiologist Luz Maria De Regil "and other researchers combined the results of eight previous studies involving thousands of children," VOA writes, adding, "The studies were done on three continents, in countries as varied as Haiti, Cambodia and Ghana." "Specifically, the supplement powder reduced anemia by about one-third and iron deficiency by half compared to no supplement or a placebo," VOA notes. "The micronutrient powder seems to be about equally effective as iron supplements, but the authors say that conclusion should be treated 'cautiously,' because of limited data," the news service adds (Chimes, 9/9).
